This is probably my first time doing a book review and it’ll be something that’ll become rampant on my page now and it’ll be done at least once every month.
The Alchemist, a book I should have read a long time ago, a book that motivates you in every way.
This book was written by Paulo Coelho, Coelho wrote this book in only two weeks in 1987, published in 1988, originally written in Portuguese.
The Alchemist is about the journey of an Andalusian boy named Santiago on a quest to find his treasure.
Santiago, while sleeping under an enormous sycamore tree in the sacristy of an abandon church had a reoccurring dream about a child who plays with his sheeps but he didn’t like when strangers do that because it frightens the sheeps but somehow when the child comes to play with the sheep, they don’t get frightened and all of a sudden the child took him by the hand and transported him to the Egyptian pyramids and said to him “If you come here, you would find a hidden treasure” and was about to show him where the treasure was located but Santiago woke up. He had this dream twice . On getting to Tarifa, he remembered there was a woman who interprets dreams, he narrated the dream to the woman and the woman told the boy his treasure was in the Egyptian pyramid, he didn’t believe her at first because she was a Gypsy and Gypsies are known for tricking people.
After that he went to the market to eat and traded his book for a thicker one, while reading the book he met an old man named Melchizedek, king of salem. They had a conversation. He asked Santiago to give one-tenth of his sheep so he could tell him where his treasure was and Melchizedek told him the same thing the old woman told him. He tells Santiago about good and bad omen. Melchizedek gave him two stones which are Urim and Thummim, they would help him read omen.
Santiago sold his flocks and purchased a ticket to Tangier, in northern Africa, where all his money was stolen. He decided to look for a way to make money so he could go back home since he had nothing, he got a job in the shop of a crystal merchant which he contributed to greatly.
After working there for eleven months he had acquired wealth, unsure of how to proceed he contemplated going home a rich man, buying sheep or going to Egypt in search of his treasure.
Anyways he goes to Egypt where he met an English man who wanted to learn the secret of alchemy (transforming metal into gold), from a famous alchemist in the oasis on their way to Egypt. While traveling Santiago begins to listen to the desert, discovering the soul of the world. When the caravan reaches the oasis, Santiago met an Arabian girl named Fatima and instantly falls in love with her and wanted to marry her but she told him when he has completed his journey she will marry him till then she will wait for him.
Tribal warfare prevented them from continuing their journey, Santiago wanders into the desert and saw two hawks fighting in the sky and had a vision of an army entering the oasis and the rules of the oasis was “no army or troops should be sheltered in the oasis”. He told the chieftains.
Santiago was confronted by a man in black, he had a sword and a falcon on his shoulder. The Alchemist, who offered to cross the desert with him, on their journey through, they entered into an area of intense tribal war and they were captured but later released. On the seventh day, the alchemist told Santiago, he was almost at the end of his journey and he was to complete it alone, gave him directions to the pyramids.
Getting to the pyramids, he started to dig but found nothing, thieves came and beat him up mercilessly and robs him after he told them about his dream. One of the thieves remembered his own dream about his own treasure in the sacristy of an abandoned church.
Santiago returned to Andalusia, he went back to the church where he had the dream and digs the same spot he slept under the sycamore tree and found his treasure.
The main theme of this story is never give up in what you believe in. Remember the advice the old king gave to Santiago “When you want something, the whole universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” This was the advice keeping him. Santiago could have giving up when he was robbed in Tangier and lost everything or when he was beaten at the pyramid or when we went to the old woman to read his dream because frankly his dream seemed funny but he kept pushing through no matter the obstacle that came his way. Paulo Coelho referred to the boy as the alchemist because he was able to turn his life into gold.
